Key Tips for Optimizing Your Website to Get More Traffic

No matter how awesome your website looks, if the appropriate people aren’t seeing it, you’re just wasting your time.  “So, how do I get more traffic to my website?”   We hear this question very frequently from potential clients.  It’s no secret – content has a huge impact on how your website is found in search results.  Although there are a few “behind the scene” tricks developers can do to help in search placement of your pages with Search Engine Optimization (SEO), the true test really comes down to what you’re saying, to whom and it’s relevancy related to information they’re currently searching for online.  For this reason, it’s particularly  important that your website content contain a story or relevant discussion about your product or service using specific keywords or phrases your market is searching for.   Here are a few tips we consider on every website we develop or optimize for our clients:

Speak to Your Target Audience

It’s funny how many business people we speak to that still believe that everyone who breathes is their “target audience.”  While that can be true in general terms, effective marketing is about speaking directly to the needs and wants of a specific type of person in your market.  This doesn’t mean you have to limit yourself to just that one type of person, but how you communicate to them may be different.  For example, how you might connect with women is different than with men.  Also, reaching teens or young adults is different than reaching mature adults or elderly.  For this reason, designing specific navigation,  pages or even blog articles can be very effective in helping you connect with your potential client and increase your opportunity for them to take action.

Use Relevant Keywords In Your Content

A great, tool we recommend to our clients it the Google Keyword Tool.  Not only is it a free resource, but it’s very helpful in identifying the overall number of people both globally and locally searching for the words you’ve chosen.  It also offers suggestions on additional words or phrases to consider.  We use this tool on every website we build or manage.  We also use it for a quick list of suggested words to include in a blog or article we may write as well to make sure our content is relevant and found in search results.  For website development or SEO work  for a client we typically perform a comprehensive keyword research to help identify particular phrases or keywords that will help their website stand out among their competition.  This process typically allocates a third of the time we spend in development of a website.  When we find specific terms to use that have desired performance results, we’ll incorporate these words/phrases into the titles, headers or content of your web page in a very conversational manner.   Be careful not to “over stuff” your website with the same words or simply make it so keyword rich it makes no sense to read.  This can actually cause you to be dropped from traffic results.

Add A Blog To Drive Traffic & Keep Site Fresh

Many clients who want us to help them with Search Engine Optimization or Social Media are often surprised when we suggest adding a blog to their website first.  First, search engines see the program of the Blog and know it means “change” so sites that have a blog included or are built using a blog foundation are already friends of the search engines.  That said, like a friendship, you have to keep the relationship going with updated content and articles so that the other doesn’t become board with you and find a new interesting friend to hang out with.  It’s funny, but your customers and potential customers, respond in the same way.  We typically use blogs as a place to post company news, product updates, daily activities, helpful information, interesting articles, etc.  Posting once a day is hard for some, so we suggest at minimum once per week to keep activity flowing.  Also, you can post links to your new updates using your social media accounts like Facebook, Twitter, and Linkedin to keep others informed of what you’re doing or offering.  Depending on the product you use for your blog, you can also offer an RSS Feed which allows visitors to subscribe to your blog.  Like a newspaper subscription, this sends them a notice (in the method they’ve indicated) to tell them new stories are available for them to read.
